Happy Holidays!

Christmas has come and gone and now the new year is almost here! The boys have had an exciting couple of weeks filled with cookie baking, crafts and hanging out with family. Santa came to our house and delivered gifts that are still holding their interest and attention. Life is slowly getting back to normal. Luke has been talking a lot more and we're really beginning to understand and communicate with him. Hope everyone had a nice Christmas, and best wishes for a wonderful new year!

My Boys

I was looking through our photos the other day and realized that there are very few of me and the boys. So this morning, I made Rob take some. The quality is not quite what I would like, but it's good enough for now.

I don't have too much to update today, but thought instead I would focus this post on reflection of the past year, since we are approaching the end of 2008. The boys have changed a lot, and parenting them is also changing. Luke began walking early in the year, I weaned him this fall and he's now beginning to talk, so he's really not a baby anymore. He's a bundle of energy and so very cute. However, he has been a bit of a challenge for me (which is probably mostly due to me having to keep up with both him and his brother). He's very adventurous and determined, demanding his fair share of our attention. No longer can he be left behind, he wants to do everything that Dylan does (I think he thinks he's closer to three than 19 months). Dylan is also changing a lot. It's harder to see on a daily basis, but when I look back at videos and photos from earlier in the year I see a little boy, who's now more grown up. Dylan is more cautious and thoughtful, I can see how he has grown more confident in himself over the year. He is brave and so very smart; I am often surprised by the things he says and does. I have to admit that working full time and keeping up with two young boys is very tiring, and I don't always have the energy and patience I wish I did. By the end of each day I am ready for them to be in bed, quiet and sleeping. Then as I watch them sleep I realize how precious they are; how they are growing so fast and no longer my tiny babies; how I need to try to appreciate every moment. But too often I fail. I wish I could be better. I hope they know how much I love them and how lucky I am to have them and their daddy as part of my life...they are my life. I love you boys (all three of you!).

SNOW

It snowed today for about 20 minutes - a very unusual sight for us! It was so cold that the rain turned to snow and lightly fell to the ground. The kids were at daycare, but they saw it too and went outside to feel it fall on them. Of course it melted as soon as it hit the ground, but it was still pretty neat!

Wedding Photo

CLASSIC (Neither Rob nor I have any idea when this was taken during the wedding ceremony - he looks pretty ornery though!)

The Ring Bearer

We just returned home from a trip to San Diego. Rob's cousin got married and Dylan was the ring bearer in the wedding. I was pretty nervous about him "performing" since several days before we left, he said he wasn't going to do it. It was a big job for a little three year old! However when it came time for the rehearsal and the wedding our little guy did it! And he did a fantastic job.
I can't believe it's already December and Christmas is right around the corner. I haven't done any shopping and have no idea what to get anyone!!! Rob put up the lights yesterday and we'll get a tree this weekend. I'm just feeling tired and unmotivated after a long weekend...

Fall Shots

Beautiful boy!

"Don't picture me, Papa!!"

Well, we had our first family Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year. Mom did most of the cooking and it was all delicious! The boys are growing up more and more. Dylan is going through a rough patch lately - we were lucky to not really go through the "terrible twos"; but three has had it's days that leave me wondering "who is this child?!" He really is sweet and pleasant for the most part, but there has been a lot of frustration and whining that is starting to drive me crazy!! I just try to stay calm and remember that he is only three and this too shall pass... He is very excited about Christmas and wants everything he sees! Lukie is getting to be a big boy! We went to the doctor for his 18 month appointment last week and he is the size of an average 29 month old! He is catching up with his brother at an amazing pace. He's talking more and more and we are actually starting to understand him! The boys do fight a lot, but they also enjoy playing with each other. I really need to find a good book to figure out how to deal with all the sibling s#*t!! Here are some photos of them playing in the cul de sac yesterday. It's finally feeling like fall around here - the weather is crisp and cool and the leaves are changing color (my favorite time of the year!)

VOTE!

I can proudly say I have voted in every important election (I admit that I don't always vote when it's for school board members, as I have no clue about the candidates; although someday soon I will have to educate myself). Anyway, I am sure my political views are evident from this blog, but seeing as tomorrow is election day, I can't resist. Also, I have to say how much I love permanent absentee voting - I won't have to deal with any waiting or lines tomorrow, since I sent in our ballots over a week ago!
I have HOPE!!! (If you are planning to vote for McCain, please stay home tomorrow!)

Happy Halloween

I think it's an annual tradition to have the damn camera battery die on Halloween night (this is the third year it has happened). You would think we might get smart and charge it beforehand! Anyway, my MIL got some photos of the boys dressed up and I will post them as soon as I get copies. In the meantime, here is a cute one of Dylan at daycare last week with his little buddies M and D. FYI he is Buzz Lightyear (cheap Target-bought costume that he insisted on having!!).

Updated with pictures taken after trick or treating... they didn't want candy, but instead wanted a decorated cup cake I brought home (that's what's all over their faces!)

Pumpkin Patch '08

The boys had their annual trip to the pumpkin patch. As usual, they had a great time. They loved all the baby animals, although I think the goats are their favorite!

Clydesdales & A Dalmation

The Budweiser Clydesdales are here at UC Davis for the opening ceremony of the new Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. They are staying in the UC Davis Horse Barn and the university community was invited to come out to see them. I thought this would be a neat outing for the boys and Daddy today, plus I thought it would be really cool to see such grand animals up close. Wow they sure are neat! When we arrived two of them were being washed and several others were in the pen. These guys are huge; it's amazing! There is also a dalmatian who rides in the coach with the handlers, his name is "Brady", or the "fire dog" as Dylan says.

So as we're leaving I ask Dylan: "Did you like the horses?"

D: "Yeah, but I really liked the fire dog! Where are the firemen?"
D: "Mama can we get a fire dog? I really want one."

Catching Up

Wow. It's been quite a while since I've composed a post or posted any photos here. I have fallen behind on blog maintenance (I apologize). Life has been busy these days... The boys are growing up and amazing us each day. Luke is starting to talk and they play more and more with each other. Dylan is a full-fledged little boy - or a "big" boy if you ask him! Luke will be 17 months old in a couple of days. It's amazing when I think of them both just a year ago, how much they've changed. I find myself breaking up a lot of scuffles between them lately. Luke does his best to keep up with Dylan and doesn't seem intimidated by much. I know I need to just step back and enjoy them at this stage, they are adorable. It's just so exhausting with work and life in general. I tend to realize just how lucky we are at the end of the day, when they are sleeping quietly and just so very sweet! Not only have I neglected the blog, but realized the other day that I had no (zero, none) photos from the month of September. In my defense, I have been working full time (it's the busiest time for me at work) and we have been traveling as well. On that note, I have to document that we survived a trip to Oklahoma for a family wedding. It was not so easy flying there with Lukie, but we made it (thanks Papa!!). Here are some shots of the boys cooking brownies with Sitie (it gets kind of messy) and a shot from our trip this past weekend to Lake Tahoe. Fun times...

Wet Wheelbarrow Ride

Mom and I went to the grocery store yesterday and left the boys at home with Papa. They were in the pool when we left, and this is what we returned home to. It was hilarious, so it had to be captured on video for all to see and to remember forever...

San Diego

We just returned from a nice trip down to sunny San Diego. The boys had a great visit with their Vavo, Grandpa & Aunt Sandie. Dylan had another birthday celebration (aka more presents & cake!). We took a day trip to the beach, where they splashed in the waves, played in the sand and soaked up the sun. Then a trip to Legoland with Mommy, Daddy & Dilly. It ended with Dylan & Luke getting to meet some extended family for the first time... great memories (& photos).

BFFs

I have to dedicate this post to Dilly and his BFF Marah. I have known for a while that Dilly and Marah are great friends. She is the daughter of the wonderful woman who watches Dylan and Luke 3 days a week. Dylan has known Marah since he was 7 months old. They are very close in age, with Marah just older by about 4 months. I really just became aware of how close they were after Dilly's birthday party. When looking at the photos, I noticed that he and Marah are together in almost all the shots. I've joked for quite a while now that Marah may very well someday be his wife, or at least a girlfriend along the way... a mother can wish!!

Firehouse Fun!

For Dylan's birthday we went to the City of Woodland Fire Station #1. It was really pretty neat! I think all the kids (and parents) had fun. We got to see the fireman go down the pole, the kids got to climb in the truck and I think the best part was that they each got to spray the fire hose. I had no idea it would be so hands-on...it was great! I would recommend this for a fun, educational and cheap (it was free) birthday idea for any kid who loves fire engines. Anyway, we went back to the house for lunch (don't you know that fire fighters eat hot dogs!) and yummy cake. It was a big day, but Dylan had a lot of fun. I also enjoyed it as it wasn't quite the production (as far as planning goes) on my end.
Enjoy a slide show with photos from the day...

Three

Happy Birthday Bug!! Today you are three years old, and I still can't believe it. You're growing up so fast (too fast sometimes I think). I remember this day three years ago - we have both changed and grown so much since then. Now you are a full fledged little boy; and I am a mommy! I'm amazed by the things you do each and every day. You are sweet and playful, just down right silly a lot of the time; you are also sensitive and quite thoughtful, very aware of your surroundings; you are mischievous, independent and quite opinionated to boot. You are Dylan, my baby boy (and I know you'll tell me that you're not a baby, you're a big boy; but you will always be my baby)! I love you more than I can express in writing; the feeling just completely overwhelms my heart and body. I am so very lucky to have you and your little brother in my world; as cheesy as it sounds, you make me a better person! Happy number three my little fireman!
Hugs & Kisses, Mama
